Questions:

The Westerlies, 鈥渁n arty quartet鈥ixing ideas from jazz, new classical, and Appalachian folk鈥 (The New York Times), hold a singular space in modern music. From Carnegie Hall to Coachella, the GRAMMY-nominated ensemble has upended presumptions of the brass tradition to create music that is 鈥渇olk-like and composerly, lovely and intellectually rigorous鈥 (NPR Music). Joining The Westerlies this evening is Denison’s Wind Ensemble, Chris Westover-Mu帽oz, conductor.

Comprising of Riley Mulherkar and Chloe Rowlands on trumpet and Andy Clausen and Addison Maye-Saxon on trombone, the ensemble has relentlessly composed, arranged, adapted, recorded, and toured over the past fifteen years with the precision of a string quartet, the audacity of a rock band, and the charm of a family sing-along.

Across ten critically acclaimed studio albums, The Westerlies have earned 鈥渁 unique reputation for exploring the emotional textures of American music鈥 (DownBeat), championing living composers and collaborators including Caroline Shaw, Nico Muhly, Conrad Tao, Wayne Horvitz, Robin Holcomb, and Theo Bleckmann.

___

The Vail Series was endowed in 1979 by a generous gift from the late Mary and Foster McGaw in honor of Jeanne Vail, class of 1946. Just as it was intended to do, the Series enriches the artistic experience of the entire Denison community. Programmed creatively with the mindful pursuit of learning across traditional academic boundaries, more than 100 individual Vail Series artists have found their way to Denison鈥檚 classrooms and stages, but that doesn鈥檛 include the dozens of ensembles or full symphony orchestras that have played here over the years.
